Common Cold Q & A
What is the common cold?
The common cold is a condition that refers to a viral infection that affects your nose, throat, and airways. A cold is not a serious illness but can cause uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Sore throat
- Low-grade fever
- Body aches
- Mild headache
Typically, when your child has a cold, their symptoms resolve in a week to 10 days. Treatments usually focus on relieving their discomfort so they can eat and rest well.
When does my child need to see the doctor about their cold?
Sometimes, cold symptoms develop into something more serious, such as strep throat, asthma, acute sinusitis, pneumonia, or a severe ear infection.
You may need to see one of our Pediatric Physicians if your child develops any of these symptoms:
- Shortness of breath
- Fever that lasts more than five days
- Recurring fever of 101.3°F or higher
- Severe sinus pain, sore throat, or a headache
- Ear pain
- Hacking or barking cough
- Chest pain
- Worsening sore throat
If your child has asthma or a history of strep throat, Dr. Vidyasagaran may suggest they need an exam with the first signs of a cold.
What are the treatments for the common cold?
Because the common cold is a viral infection, symptoms usually just need to run their course. However, you can help relieve your child’s discomfort by:
- Encouraging lots of rest
- Using a humidifier at night
- Encouraging them to drink fluids low in sugar
- Providing them with warm liquids, like tea or soup
- Helping them gargle salt water
- Using a nasal aspirator to remove nasal drainage
- Elevating their head while sleeping
Some over-the-counter medicines may be helpful for relief, but not all are the best for your child. Check with Dr. Vidyasagaran for her medication recommendations for your child, which will depend on their symptoms, medical history, and age.
